Russell Houston, cellist, has been praised for his “intrinsically musical
[playing]” (Dallas Morning News). Russell is a Master of Music candidate at the Colburn
Conservatory where he studies with Clive Greensmith. He received his bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University, where he studied with Hans Jørgen Jensen.
Houston has performed with orchestras including the Dallas Symphony Orchestra,
Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra, and Plano Symphony Orchestra, among others. He has won numerous prizes and awards including top prizes at the Sorantin International Competition, Lynn Harrell Concerto Competition, and the Northwestern University Chamber Music Competition. He also was the recipient of the Runner-Up Award as well as the Special Prize for his performance of the commissioned work at the Mondavi Young Artists Founders’ Competition. Besides this, he has received awards at competitions including the Lennox International Young Artists Competition, the Samuel and Elinore Thaviu Competition.
An avid chamber musician, Russell has worked intensively on chamber music with artists including the Dover Quartet and New Orford Quartet, as well as Shmuel Ashkenasi, Martin Beaver, Robert Chen, Ronald Copes, Paul Ellison, David Finckel, Pamela Frank, Wu Han, Ida Kavaﬁan, Masao Kawasaki, Cho-Liang Lin, Seymour Lipkin, Sylvia Rosenberg, Philip Setzer, Joseph Silverstein, Laurie Smukler, Arnold Steinhardt, and Peter Wiley. He has studied and performed at festivals including the Piatigorsky Cello Festival, the David Finckel- Wu Han chamber music workshop at the Aspen
Music Festival, Great Mountains Music Festival, Kneisel Hall, Sarasota Music Festival, New York String Orchestra Seminar, Orford Academy, and the NAC Young Artist Program in Ottawa, Canada. Russell has had the privilege of playing for prominent artists and pedagogues including Timothy Eddy, David Geringas, Frans Helmerson, Ralph Kirshbaum, Ronald Leonard, Laurence Lesser, Johannes Moser, Daniel Müller-Schott, Janos
Starker, and Jian Wang.

The Odysseus North Texas Chamber Orchestra finishes off the season with the resounding and glorious Symphony No. 5 by Beethoven and Schumann's Cello Concerto in A Minor in which the orchestra will be joined by rising star Russell Houston on cello.
A native of Dallas, Russell has been featured in “On the Top,” was 1st Prize Winner of the Lynn Harrell Competition, 2nd Prize Winner of the Mondavi Competition and has been invited to the prestigious Piatrjorsky Cello Festival. Russell is currently studying at the renown Colburn School in Los Angeles.
